Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 3 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest -19.7%, highest 33.5%.
Gross margin, each year
Between -9.8% and 19.4% over 10 years (a range of 29.2 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Jan 30, 2026
The commercial jet aircraft market and the airline industry remain extremely competitive. BCA faces aggressive international competitors who are intent on increasing their market share, such as Airbus and entrants from China. We are focused on improving our products and processes and continuing cost reduction efforts. We intend to continue to compete with other aircraft manufacturers by providing customers with airplanes and services that deliver superior design, safety, quality, efficiency and value to customers around the world. BDS faces strong competition primarily from General Dynamics Corporation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, RTX Corporation and SpaceX. Non-U.S. companies such as BAE Systems and Airbus Group continue to build a strategic presence in the U.S. market by strengthening their North American operations and partnering with U.S. defense companies. In addition, certain competitors have occasionally formed teams with other competitors to address specific customer requirements. BDS expects the trend of strong competition to continue into 2026. The commercial and defense services markets are extremely challenging and are made up of many of the same strong U.S. and non-U.S. competitors facing BCA and BDS along with other competitors in those markets.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in 1 of 4 years (fail); $331.00M paid out against -$9.56B of free cash flow (fail: free cash flow was negative); total debt $57.28B to $54.43B, down 5.0%, 7.4x EBITDA (pass: not up more than 10%); shares outstanding 0.60B to 0.78B, up 31.3% (fail: up more than 2%). 1 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 2.

No AI is involved in this scorecard. The moat is shown as evidence, without a score. Read each score with the figures beside it. A check that cannot be scored from the available data is shown as not scored and left out of the composite score. Intrinsic value calculations are model outputs based on stated assumptions, not predictions.
