Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 4 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest -9.3%, highest 25.3%.
Gross margin, each year
Between 69.1% and 78.6% over 10 years (a range of 9.5 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Feb 11, 2026
The markets in which we compete are generally broad-based and highly competitive. We compete with other global research-based drug companies, many smaller research companies with more limited therapeutic focus and generic drug manufacturers. Important competitive factors include product efficacy, safety and ease of use, price and demonstrated cost-effectiveness, marketing effectiveness, product labeling, customer service and R&D of new products and processes. Sales of our products can be impacted by new studies that indicate a competitor’s product is safer or more effective for treating a disease or particular form of disease than one of our products. Our revenues also can be impacted by additional labeling requirements relating to safety or convenience that may be imposed on products by the FDA or by similar regulatory agencies in different countries. If competitors introduce new products and processes with therapeutic or cost advantages, our products can be subject to progressive price reductions, decreased volume of sales or both. Advancements in treating cancer with IO therapies continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Our IO products, particularly Opdivo , operate in a highly competitive marketplace.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. For a year whose 10-K financial data has no standard operating income figure, earnings before interest and taxes (pre-tax income plus interest expense) is used. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $32.44B paid out against $51.39B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $40.72B to $47.14B, up 15.8%, 3.1x EBITDA (fail: up more than 10% and above 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 2.08B to 2.04B, down 1.9% (pass). 3 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 4.

Graham Formula:
IV = EPS x (8.5 + 2g) x (4.4 / Y)
EPS = $4.54, g = 0.0%, Y = 4.5
g floored at 0.0% (3-year EPS CAGR was -5.3%; below -4.25% the formula returns a negative value)
IV = $37.73
Current price $59.75 vs Graham value $37.73 — price is 58.4% above the model value.
DCF:
FCF/share = $3.972
Stage 1 growth = 3.5% for 5 years | terminal growth = 3.0% | discount rate = 10.0%
Y1: $4.111 → PV $3.738
Y2: $4.255 → PV $3.517
Y3: $4.404 → PV $3.309
Y4: $4.558 → PV $3.113
Y5: $4.718 → PV $2.929
Stage 1 PV sum = $16.61
Terminal value at end of Y5 = $69.42
PV of terminal value = $43.10
DCF value = $59.71
Current price $59.75 vs DCF value $59.71 — price is 0.1% above the model value.Data from yfinance summary figures and financial statements, and from the company’s 10-K filings via SEC EDGAR; computed at a price of $59.75. Every score is calculated from the figures by the framework’s fixed rules, and the explanation beside it is generated from the same figures: Graham value, DCF value, margin of safety, ROIC, profit margins, debt-to-equity, price-to-book, EPS trend, ROE trend, free cash flow, retained earnings and capital allocation.
