Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 5 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest 6.6%, highest 19.4%.

Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Feb 18, 2026
In our traditional power generation markets, we face competition from a variety of large, diversified industrial companies, as well as smaller generator manufacturers or packagers around the world. The competitive landscape varies between our Residential and C&I power generation products. We face a different set of competitors for our mobile equipment and engine-powered tools as well. In recent years, our competitive landscape has expanded as we enter certain energy technology markets, including solar inverters, battery storage systems, smart thermostats, and grid services. In the overall generator market, many of the traditional participants compete in only certain portions of the market, targeting specific applications within their larger, diversified product mix. In addition, for certain competitors, power generation is typically a smaller piece of their business, and therefore, is less prioritized from a strategic standpoint. Generac’s primary focus is on power generation and storage equipment with a key emphasis on standby, portable and mobile products and broad capabilities across residential, light-commercial and industrial markets. We believe that our core focus on power generation and storage drives product innovation and provides us with competitive advantages to win in the marketplace. We also believe our broad product offering, diverse omni-channel distribution model, and strong factory support provide additional advantages as well.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $898.01M paid out against $1.24B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $1.60B to $1.50B, down 6.4%, 3.2x EBITDA (pass: not up more than 10%); shares outstanding 0.06B to 0.06B, down 4.5% (pass). 4 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 5.
