Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 6 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest 2.0%, highest 26.6%.
Gross margin, each year
Between 30.0% and 36.8% over 10 years (a range of 6.8 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Feb 20, 2026
Our Global Automotive and Industrial businesses operate in highly competitive markets, with a wide range of national, regional and local businesses. In our Automotive segments, competition comes from specialty parts chains, automobile manufacturers (including those selling parts for their own and other manufacturers’ vehicles), automobile dealers, warehouse clubs, mass merchandisers and online retailers. Key competitors in North America include AutoZone, Inc., O'Reilly Auto Parts, Inc., Advance Auto Parts, Inc., and LKQ Corporation, among others. Internationally, competitors include LKQ Corporation, which has a strong presence in Europe, and Bapcor in Australasia, among many others. In industrial distribution, our main competitor is Applied Industrial Technologies, Inc., but we also compete against Fastenal Company, and W.W. Grainger, Inc, among many other smaller, regional competitors. Our competitive advantages are based on broad product availability, quality service, strong brand recognition, and competitive pricing. Further information regarding competition in the industry is set forth in “Item 1A. Risk Factors — We face substantial competition in the industries in which we do business."

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. For a year whose 10-K financial data has no standard operating income figure, earnings before interest and taxes (pre-tax income plus interest expense) is used. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $2.78B paid out against $3.16B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $4.16B to $6.54B, up 56.9%, 8.7x EBITDA (fail: up more than 10% and above 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 0.14B to 0.14B, down 2.4% (pass). 3 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 4.

Graham Formula:
IV = EPS x (8.5 + 2g) x (4.4 / Y)
EPS = $0.25, g = 0.0%, Y = 4.5
g floored at 0.0% (3-year EPS CAGR was -77.6%; below -4.25% the formula returns a negative value)
IV = $2.08
Current price $133.96 vs Graham value $2.08 — price is 6347.3% above the model value.
DCF:
FCF/share = $6.653
Stage 1 growth = 2.6% for 5 years | terminal growth = 3.0% | discount rate = 10.0%

Y2: $7.004 → PV $5.788
Y3: $7.186 → PV $5.399
Y4: $7.373 → PV $5.036

Stage 1 PV sum = $27.13
Terminal value at end of Y5 = $111.31
PV of terminal value = $69.11
DCF value = $96.24
Current price $133.96 vs DCF value $96.24 — price is 39.2% above the model value.Data from yfinance summary figures and financial statements, and from the company’s 10-K filings via SEC EDGAR; computed at a price of $133.96. Every score is calculated from the figures by the framework’s fixed rules, and the explanation beside it is generated from the same figures: Graham value, DCF value, margin of safety, ROIC, profit margins, debt-to-equity, price-to-book, EPS trend, ROE trend, free cash flow, retained earnings and capital allocation. No AI is involved in this scorecard. The moat is shown as evidence, without a score. Read each score with the figures beside it.
