Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 2 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest 1.8%, highest 23.2%.
Gross margin, each year
Between 51.0% and 80.3% over 10 years (a range of 29.3 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Feb 26, 2026
Our business is conducted in intensely competitive and highly regulated markets. Many of our products face competition in the form of branded or generic drugs or biosimilars that treat similar diseases or indications. The principal forms of competition include efficacy, safety, tolerability, ease of use and cost. Though the means of competition vary among our products, demonstrating the value of our products is a critical factor for success. We compete with other companies that manufacture and sell products that treat or prevent diseases or indications similar to those treated or prevented by our major products. These competitors include other worldwide research-based biopharmaceutical companies, smaller research companies with more limited therapeutic focus and generic drug and biosimilar manufacturers. Our competitors also may devote substantial funds and resources to R&D and their successful R&D could result in erosion of the sales of our existing products and potential sales of our products in development, as well as product obsolescence. In addition, several of our competitors operate without large R&D expenses and make a regular practice of challenging our product patents before their expiration. To help address competitive trends we continually emphasize innovation, which is underscored by our multi-billion-dollar investment in R&D, as well as our business development transactions, both designed to result in a strong and differentiated product pipeline.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. For a year whose 10-K financial data has no standard operating income figure, earnings before interest and taxes (pre-tax income plus interest expense) is used. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $39.51B paid out against $49.73B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $34.86B to $63.96B, up 83.5%, 3.8x EBITDA (fail: up more than 10% and above 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 5.62B to 5.69B, up 1.2% (pass). 3 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 4.

Graham Formula:
IV = EPS x (8.5 + 2g) x (4.4 / Y)
EPS = $0.76, g = 20.0%, Y = 4.5
g capped at 20.0% (3-year EPS CAGR was 91.7%)
IV = $36.04
Current price $29.58 vs Graham value $36.04 — price is 17.9% below the model value.
DCF:
FCF/share = $2.191
Stage 1 growth = 2.5% for 5 years | terminal growth = 3.0% | discount rate = 10.0%
Y1: $2.245 → PV $2.041
Y2: $2.301 → PV $1.902
Y3: $2.359 → PV $1.772
Y4: $2.418 → PV $1.652
Y5: $2.478 → PV $1.539
Stage 1 PV sum = $8.91
Terminal value at end of Y5 = $36.47
PV of terminal value = $22.64
DCF value = $31.55
Current price $29.58 vs DCF value $31.55 — price is 6.2% below the model value.Data from yfinance summary figures and financial statements, and from the company’s 10-K filings via SEC EDGAR; computed at a price of $29.58. Every score is calculated from the figures by the framework’s fixed rules, and the explanation beside it is generated from the same figures: Graham value, DCF value, margin of safety, ROIC, profit margins, debt-to-equity, price-to-book, EPS trend, ROE trend, free cash flow, retained earnings and capital allocation. No AI is involved in this scorecard. The moat is shown as evidence, without a score. Read each score with the figures beside it.
