Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 2 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest 2.1%, highest 17.3%.

Between 76.0% and 80.6% over 10 years (a range of 4.6 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Dec 22, 2025
Within our Design Automation segment, we compete against other EDA vendors and against our customers’ own design tools and internal design capabilities. The EDA industry is highly competitive. In general, we compete principally on technology leadership, product quality and features (including ease-of-use), license terms, price and payment terms, post-contract customer support, flexibility of tool use, and interoperability with our own and other vendors’ products. We also deliver a significant amount of engineering and design consulting for our products. No single factor drives an EDA customer’s buying decision, and we compete on all fronts to capture a higher portion of our customers’ budgets. We compete with a variety of different EDA vendors, including publicly traded companies offering varying ranges of products and services as well as other EDA vendors that offer products focused on one or more discrete phases of the IC design process. Additionally, some of our customers internally develop design tools and capabilities that compete with our products. For our Ansys S&A software solutions, our competitors include publicly traded companies, small, geographically-focused firms, startups, and solutions produced in-house by the end users. Within our Design IP segment, Synopsys competes against numerous other IP providers and our customers' internally developed IP.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in 2 of 4 years (fail); $2.26B paid out against $5.73B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $656.37M to $14.29B, up 2077.6%, 5.7x EBITDA (fail: up more than 10% and above 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 0.15B to 0.19B, up 22.1% (fail: up more than 2%). 1 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 2.
