Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 3 of 10 years (2016-2025); lowest 11.3%, highest 17.4%.
Gross margin, each year
Between 41.7% and 199.8% over 10 years (a range of 158.1 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Jan 28, 2026
We primarily operate in the United States and Canada, and have a smaller presence in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The North American equipment rental industry is highly fragmented and competitive. As the largest equipment rental company in the industry, we estimate that we have an approximate 15 percent market share in North America based on 2025 total equipment rental industry revenues (excluding party and event rentals) as measured by the ARA. Estimated market share is calculated by dividing our total 2025 North American rental revenue by ARA’s forecasted 2025 industry revenue (excluding party and event rentals). Our competitors primarily include small, independent businesses with one or two rental locations; regional competitors that operate in one or more states; public companies or divisions of public companies that operate nationally or internationally; and equipment vendors and dealers who both sell and rent equipment directly to customers. We believe we are well positioned to take advantage of this environment because, as a larger company, we have more resources and certain competitive advantages over our smaller competitors. These advantages include greater purchasing power, the ability to provide customers with a broader range of equipment and services, and greater flexibility to transfer equipment among locations in response to, and in anticipation of, customer demand.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2022-2025: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $6.98B paid out against $2.46B of free cash flow (fail: paid out more than free cash flow); total debt $12.22B to $15.67B, up 28.2%, 2.2x EBITDA (fail: up more than 10% and above 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 0.07B to 0.06B, down 9.0% (pass). 2 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 3.
