Business quality
A moat (a brand, a network, switching costs, patents, scale, a licence) is not a number in the filings, so Valerius doesn’t score it. Below are the figures and the words moat analysis starts from, from the company’s own 10-K filings. The conclusion is yours.
Return on capital, each year
Above 15% in 7 of 10 years (2017-2026); lowest 13.0%, highest 17.9%.

Between 23.5% and 24.9% over 10 years (a range of 1.4 points).
Competition, in the company’s own words · 10-K filed Mar 13, 2026
We compete with brick and mortar, eCommerce and omnichannel retailers operating discount, department, retail and wholesale grocery, drug, dollar, variety and specialty stores, supermarkets, supercenter-type stores, membership-only warehouse clubs, gasoline stations and social commerce platforms, as well as companies that offer services in digital advertising, fulfillment and delivery services, health and wellness and financial services. Our ability to develop and effectively operate different formats at the right locations and to deliver a customer-centric omnichannel experience largely determines our competitive position in the retail industry within the markets where we operate. Each of these landscapes is highly competitive and rapidly evolving, and new business models and the entry of new, well-funded competitors continue to intensify this competition. Some of our competitors have longer histories in these lines of business, more customers and greater brand recognition. They may be able to obtain more favorable terms from suppliers and business partners and to devote greater resources to the development of these businesses. In addition, for eCommerce and other internet-based businesses, newer or smaller businesses may be better able to innovate and compete with us.

Return on capital = operating income / (total assets − current liabilities), the ROIC row’s definition; 15% is the framework’s return threshold. Gross margin = gross profit / revenue. Both from each year’s 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Moat analysis commonly looks at whether returns and margins held up over many years. These figures don’t say whether the company has an advantage, what it is, or whether it will last.
Capital allocation, 2023-2026: dividends or buybacks paid in every year (pass); $51.73B paid out against $54.69B of free cash flow (pass); total debt $58.92B to $67.09B, up 13.9%, 1.4x EBITDA (pass: at most 2x EBITDA); shares outstanding 8.10B to 7.97B, down 1.6% (pass). 4 of 4 tests passed; the framework scores that as 5.
